Advanced Package Dimensions

Why use advanced package dimensions?

Importance of accurate dimensions

For many shipping carriers, package dimensions are an important input when determining overall shipping cost. Large packages are often subject to restrictions or dimensional weight charges.

Unfortunately, the Shopify product catalog does not capture product dimensions. This makes estimating return package dimensions a challenge.

ReturnZap solutions for package dimensions

A simple solution to this is to define one or more package types for use in the ReturnZap returns portal:

Setting up package dimensions in ReturnZap

This method requires that customers select from a few predetermined box sizes.

Shops with more complex product catalogs may have many different box sizes, which depend on the products being returned. The solution to this is to use the advanced package dimensions feature in ReturnZap.

Enabling advanced package dimensions in ReturnZap

Advanced package dimensions can be configured in ReturnZap Settings > Shipping > Packages

Once enabled, ReturnZap will look for product tags in order to determine package dimensions and calculate proper shipping rates.

Catalog requirements for advanced package dimensions

When advanced package dimensions are enabled, ReturnZap will look for a product tag on each product in your Shopify catalog.

The tag must take the following format:

lwh:XX_XX_XX

Where the XX values represent length, width, and height of the product in inches.

An example of a properly configured product tag

The product in Shopify may have additional tags, but it must contain a tag that starts with "lwh" in order for advanced package dimensions to function properly.

Frequently asked questions

What if a return includes multiple products?

If a return includes multiple products and advanced package dimensions is enabled, ReturnZap will use cartonization logic to determine an approximate box size for the return of all items.

What if a product is missing a tag?

If a product being returned is missing a tag, ReturnZap will fall back to the package types defined in Settings > Shipping > Packages. The customer will then be prompted to select from the available package types.

If only one package type is defined, ReturnZap will use that by default, and the customer will not be prompted to select a package.

What does the customer see in the returns portal?

The customer does not see anything in the returns portal when advanced package dimensions is enabled. They will not be prompted to select a package size, as the dimensions will be calculated automatically.

They will be able to proceed with their return as normal.
